BERWICK WHEELERS CYCLING CLUB

Racing and Social cycling in the Borders and Northumberland.

2nd edition of the Reivers Road Race.  Sat- 21st March

(Part of the 2015 East Scotland Road Race Series)

By Neil Wilson.

Berwick Wheelers hosted the second round of the East of Scotland Road Race Series last weekend. The Reivers Road Race, sponsored by Agrii, saw 64 riders tackle an 18mile circuit taking in Etal, Barmoor, Ancroft and Allerdean three times. The weather played its part with a stiff wind from the North ripping the race apart right from the off.

A steady stream of riders found themselves dropped very quickly on lap one. By the time the bunch reached Ford Bank for lap two, there were only about 30 riders still in contention and an early break by 5 riders had already come to nothing. At the top two riders broke clear, John Bailey from Gosforth RC and Robert Friel from Pro Vision Cycle Clothing. Both pressed on and held close to a minute's lead through lap three. Coming through Etal for the final time the bunch were eating into that advantage and up the finishing hill past Hay Farm, the gap was finally bridged. John Bailey however, managed to press on and hold a two second lead all the way to the line, with the bunch hot on his heels,  Alan Dean, Edinburgh RC, was second and Gavin Dempster, Glasgow Green CC, came third. Robert Friel slipped to 4th in the charge to the line but did take the day's Most Combative Riders Award for his efforts. Andy Waring, Berwick Wheelers only rider in the race, took a very creditable 31st.

Race mechanical support was provided by Belhaven Bikes and the event couldn't have happened without the support of volunteers from the Club, friends and family. The club would also like to wish all the best and a speedy recovery to John Cann who suffered a nasty crash on lap two.

Andrew Scorey took an excellent 8th place the following day at Stirling University's Crit on Campus racing alongside many of Scotland's strongest riders. The result enabled Andrew to continue with a run of form that has seen him not finish outside the top ten in any of his previous twelve criteriums entered.
